Message from the President
Karen
and I are grateful for the opportunity to be at an institution which
has made a difference in so many lives. And we are proud to be associated
with all of you, who support, in so many ways, the good work of
this institution. The students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends
and trustees of the College are tremendous. Your commitment makes
possible so much of what happens here. You are an inspiration to
all of us involved with the College.
As we continue to grow, aggressive expansion of our undergraduate financial
aid programs continues to be a high priority. Over 90 percent of our
students receive financial or scholarship assistance. We awarded over $3.8
million in institutional aid last school year. Without you, that would not
have been possible. Indeed, for the underserved and underprivileged, it is
vital that we help relieve the financial burden of obtaining a college
education.
This part of our mission becomes even more important as the economy
sputters, as it has in recent years. There are so many talented, highly
intelligent students that have the knowledge, skills, and desire to learn,
but may not have the financial resources necessary to open the doors and
seize the opportunity. That’s our challenge and our opportunity, and an area
where you, our family, continue to make a tremendous difference for our
region.
Our mission is the same as it was in 1889 when Presbyterian ministers
founded our great institution, to provide opportunities for the people of
the mountains. It is accomplished through personal development in a caring
community where individual fulfillment is encouraged and human dignity is
respected.
This noble undertaking would not be possible without the prayers, the many
services and the financial support of you, our alumni and many friends.
Indeed, you make the dreams come true. You make the story complete. It is
you, and what you do, which makes Karen and me so proud to be a part of this
special Pikeville Family. Thank you, and may God bless you!

Harold H. Smith
President of the College
